De Wildt GPS Routes 2025

Sound like a Pro and Know Where to Go!

Hello all you mud loving, two-stroke smelling, tyre-burning LEGENDS!
We hope you are all well, because every day is Helmet Hair Day!
Thank you all for joining the updated community structured comms on WhatsApp, we hope this
gives all members a platform to connect, especially for Weekly Rides and Club Updates!
So often we’ve met members for the first time at events like IMPI, and they whip out their flashy
brand new GPS’s with that sparkle of Iron, Bronze, Silver and Gold, yes all of them shiny
metals, glistening in their eyes!
Only to be met with how TF does thing work….?
How do I load Tracks…?
How do I know which track is which track?
And best of all, when out on the route – Which one is next?
(Promptly followed by where do I click again? Which track is which and it all starts over again
and yes it happens at every stop again 😉

We have come to the conclusion that too many guys leave GPS riding to the events only and
don’t use them on outrides or when doing training rides, which just makes it all that more difficult
figuring it out on race day.
So we’ve put together a little “self-help” guide that can be implemented on this weekend’s
DeWildt outride and give everyone the edge on the training to ace it on race day!
Additionally, so often we’ve met new members asking about DeWildt, not knowing the routes,
the climbs or refuel spots. So they are all there in the accompanying GPS file for you to explore,
play with, cut paste, trim and generally just mess around with, to familiarise yourselves with the
area and more importantly how to manage your GPS’s.
So buckle-up! Class is in session;-)

House Rules

1. Never ride alone!
2. Make sure you have a working cell phone on you at all times!
3. Full kit, always.
4. Ensure that someone at home knows where you are going and what time to expect you
back.
5. Ride with your MediKit!
6. Ensure that maintenance on the Bike is done at home and not on the trail.
7. Always ride using the Buddy system!
    a. If you don’t know how it works, then you need more buddies;-)
    b. When you get to an intersection or corner check that the rider BEHIND YOU is with you.
    c. You must see the rider behind you and that rider must acknowledge that he seesyou.
    d. Guys and Gals, this is really crucial to keep everyone safe, together and to keep the ride flowing.
8. When someone is stuck, get off your bike and help.
9. Have Fun!!!

Download Garmin BaseCamp

Download and install on PC or Mac as you wish. From there it is as simple as dragging the maps into BaseCamp from Windows Explorer or Mac Finder.
BaseCamp will automatically load
the maps into BaseCamp as we’ve saved them out.

You can get fancy and create folders in the left panel, makes it much easier for saving selected tracks out and snipping and cutting at a later stage. But no need to achieve the basics.

From here you can plug your GPS device into the computer and BaseCamp will automatically pick it up.

The Maps you dragged in will automatically be under “My Collection” on the left and you can highlight what you want to save to your device there.

NB*Your device will appear on the top left panel. Ensure the memory is cleared!
It’s important not to load everything because your device will freeze on the ride and you’ll get lost like Tony. Toooeeee Kneeeee…?

Load all the waypoints and ONLY the track sets you’ve selected to ride. Remember to load the

full track set under that Trail Name | Trail Difficulty | Sequence 001 – 004/5.

More about that later.

Once highlighted, go to the top bar of options and click on “Transfer” and on the drop down option click “Send to Device”.

A pop-up will appear and you can select options on what to transfer, always select Waypoints and Tracks. Never “Routes”.

*NB: Because of our sport, we never work on “ROUTES” but rather “TRACKS” as specified in BaseCamp.
Routes will “re-direct” while out on a ride, while a Track will stay true, as it was
created.

All the Trails that you receive for races are sent as TRACKS. Same as these.

So now the tracks are on your device, well done!

WTF NOW?

Reading Track Names

Although in essence your first step, in deciding which track you are going to ride. This is a little trickier to explain, because every track creator uses his own labelling system, but once you get the hang of the basics, they all follow a generally similar style.

Tracks are generally labelled as follows:

1 Trail Name:
this is usually abbreviated to accommodate the small screens on our devices. Thus a DeWildt ride can be labelled as DW.
If we were doing a Madalas event it may be labelled MADS.
a. In our particular case we know we are going to DeWildt so no rocket science there. But, the trail package consists of two trails!:
i. 3 Fences Abbreviated to 3F
ii. Coke Shop Abbreviated to CS
b. These are two totally different routes, in the same vast area, so be sure you know which one of the two you are choosing to ride, and stick to that in your planning.

2 Trail Difficulty:
this also varies from creator to creator, and is also abbreviated to take up less space on our device screens. At School of Hard Rocks, we like to rate difficulty based on SPICYNESS 😉 ,  the spicier she gets, the harder she will be…

a. Lemon & Herb Abbreviated to L&H
(EasyFlow)
b. Mild Abbreviated to MILD
(EasyFlow +Distance)
c. Medium Abbreviated to MEDIUM
(Comes with a Bite)
d. Hottt Abbreviated to HOTTT
(Tech and a WetWipe)
e. PeriPeri Abbreviated to PP
(Hello Mamma)

Generally we only work on L&H and PP, but in this case, and given the vastness of DeWildt, there are options to keep you all busy for days on end. Make sure you choose your poison wisely…
Level yourself against your fitness and have a look at the distances towards the end of this doccie.
A L&H Track that is 22km long is vastly different from a HOTTT track that is the exact same distance and even in the same area…
Essentially, once you’ve decided on your trail, either 3F or CS, you stick to that.
Once you’ve decided on your difficulty, you stick to that and the trail sequence follows on each other sequentially.

3 Trail Sequence:
this is the number of the track that you are on, in that particular trail.
a. For a 3 Fences Trail you’ll have 3F
b. For Difficulty you chose MEDIUM
c. And you always start at 001.
i. Once you have completed that segment of the track, you choose the
SAME NAME, SAME DIFFICULTY, but 002 at the end, on your device.
ii. 3F MEDIUM 002
1. The reason for trail sequences is when tracks have too many GPS
points/are too long, they freeze. And when tracks cross over each
other in the same sequence we’ll all be eye-balling each other not
knowing which direction on the track to go.
d. Note that in our particular case, 001 is always followed by the word REFUEL.
i. Reason being, the 3Fences shop has become unreliable with fuel, and
we don’t want you running dry out there.
ii. All 001 Routes change over to 002 at the BP Filling Station and although
you may have only done 23kms to that point, we recommend filling up
your bikes AFTER 001 on each trail. Do it!
iii. Then switch over to 002 on whichever trail you are on and enjoy the ride, till you reach the end of 002 and switch to 003 etc.

Something like this

4
In the Trail pack you’ll notice a trail labelled “Garden Route”. Not discussed above, below or in the middle of this doccie.

This is a lekker Afkak ride filled with passes on passes and passes with passes. You have to be on top of your game, Fiiing Fittt and know your way around DeWildt, even with your GPS, if you need to bail out. Great Hard Enduro training, but not a club outride per se.

Realities!

1 Please be aware that these tracks are forever changing, there is building going on in the area and where might be a track today, could be someone’s house tomorrow. So always be aware of your surroundings and if there is an issue on the trail, zoom out a little and find a new way around. The main passes should all still be there, but little double-ups inbetween needs to be navigated with what is in front of you on the day.
a. A great example of this is 3F Source, which for over two years now we are not able to ride, it has been updated on these tracks, but who knows what has happened in the last few weeks.

2 After leaving the Brewery and passing through the Solar Farm, please GO SLOW! The dust we kick up is an absolute pain for the guys maintaining those panels, and they are threatening to close that road, so please respect the request and let’s keep it open for everyone to enjoy!

3 The 3Fences shop used to be fully stocked with everything from Puncture Kits, Fuel, 2Stroke and everything in between, but that simply is not the case anymore. Hence we’ve selected the BP filling station as a base to fill up after 001 on each Trail. Please fill up here early on in the day to avoid pushing your bike very very very very far…

4 DeWildt is DeWildt – it is an area over 300sq. km and you can get lost easily. Refer to house rules, don’t ride alone and stay on the tracks!

5 Pay close attention to all the waypoints that have been marked on the Trails, these will familiarise you with the area and a good place to stop for mates are the checkpoints. Once you start knowing which passes are which, you’ll be sounding like a Pro 😉

6  Respect all people, animals and village areas. SLOW DOWN when approaching a village, no prizes for getting dust on those bed sheets that have just been hung out to dry. Perhaps a deserving PK from your mates though…

7 Pay your dues at the 3Fences gates. Cost per bike is generally R10, slightly negotiable when more than 3 bikes. These are farmer’s tribal lands that we are privileged to ride on, don’t be that guy that spoils it for the rest of us.
a. Due at each and every gate depends on your luck and the weather. If there is no one there, lucky you, open and CLOSE the gate, please.
b. If there is someone, don’t be an ass.
c. There were originally 3 gates. The last, (4th) popped up 1½ yrs ago, which is questionable, but judge it on arrival, R10 each gate.

8  Yes there are plenty of Shebeens all along the routes, but we have purposely not marked them, beers happen AFTER the ride. And it’s a long drive home, so keep it tidy.

9 Spare batteries for your GPS….please!

The local initiation ritual is commonly conducted during late June/early July and late November/early December. Please keep this in mind as it’s an area commonly used for this initiation rite, to prepare males for the responsibilities of manhood. It’s a time for solitude and not for a bunch of Dirt Bikers to spoil this rite of passage.

For the wise asses – yes the starts and finished of all the Trails are similar. 😉
a. Advanced GPS BaseCamp tip: Select your L&H or PP 001 & END to load more options on for GAR. We will be adding sections as we go. Check max .mb and keep it as low as possible. eTrex10 is limited to 10mb.
b. Also welcome to email new sections to add.

Lastly, these routes are being shared with everyone for you to explore the area, sharpen
up your GPS skills and have a much safer ride. SoHR takes no responsibility for the
routes, their accuracy, riders on the routes or permissions in the area
